GENERAL RULES AND REGISTRATION GUIDELINES - COMPETITION

  • All parents, teachers and students will hold the art of dance in the highest regard. There will be no derogatory statements concerning another studio or fellow dancer at any time. People of all ages, sizes, race, gender and ability deserve the right to perform and experience the joy of dance. If you have nothing positive to say about a piece of choreography and the dancers involved please do not say anything at all. We hold a no negativity rule and it is strictly enforced, anyone showing non-compliance to this rule will be asked to leave the event.
  • Categories that do not meet the entry requirement to warrant including them into the Synergy Showdown may be merged with another category to form the "mixed division. The high score routines from the merged category will be eligible for showcase performance. Novice entries are not eligible for high scores or showdown entry.
     
  • Registrations are accepted online, or through email, mail or fax. Late registrations will be accepted at the event, space permitting and a $15 late charge per routine. Video adjudications are not accepted for late registrations. Registrations will not be processed until payment has been received. Payment by certified cheque/money order, visa, MasterCard only. Entry fees are non-refundable. Entry fees for soloists may be refunded for medical reasons through an application process accompanied by a doctor’s note. 
  • Dancers are timed by the first movement. Timing ends when the last dancer exits the stage. Random timing is in effect. Routines over the time limit are subject to a ten point deduction. Solos- 3 mins; Duo/Trio- 3 mins; Small Group- 4 mins; Large group- 5 mins; Extra large group- 6 mins; Lines and Extended Lines- 7 mins; Production (including set up) 10- 40 dancers (10 mins) 40-60 dancers (15 mins) 60+ dancers (20mins).

  • Substances that alter the condition of the stage (ie, lose feathers, water, glass props) are not permitted in any categories. 
     
  • All numbers must have appropriate content for family viewing. Swearing or vulgar language will result in disqualification. Please do not talk, enter or exit during performances. No disruptive behavior will be tolerated; Synergy reserves the rights to refuse admission. 
     
  • Adjudication feedback will be given by means of video, audio or written which is to be selected by the studio/teacher at the time of registration. Once confirmation has been received adjudication feedback style cannot be changed. 

  • Soloists may enter only once per category. If they have two solos in the same category they must register the second as "adjudication only" or into the "open" category. Duo and Trio dancers must have a change of partners to compete twice in the same category.

  • Duos and Trios are to be calculated by the OLDEST dancer, groups are to be calculated by the average age of the dancer.

  • Re-dances will be permitted in the Novice and level 1 category in the event of an abandoned stage. Re-dances for participants 10rs and younger will be permitted at any level. Re-dances in all categories will be permitted due to technical/music problems or anything not of the dancers fault.

  • Age divisions are to be calculated by JAN 1st of the competition year. Averages at 0.51 are to be rounded up to the higher age.

  • Any teacher, parent or student walking directly in front of the judges’ table during a performance will be disqualified and asked to leave the event. The results of a competition are final. No teacher, student or parent will question a judge. The teachers’ lounge is closed during awards sessions so that judges may have their break in privacy. 
     
  • No parents will call the Synergy office. All inquiries will be made through the participating studios.

     
  • Props are allowed in ANY category, but include only those that can be easily transported on/off stage as no set up time will be allotted. (With the exception of Productions and Cheer Dance; 5 minute set up time). The cheer dance category is permitted to have thin tumble mats; acrobatics routines must compete in the Cheer Dance category if they wish to have mats. 
     
  • The School Dance Team category is reserved for any dance group that has been organized by a local elementary or high school only. 
     
  • We are environmentally friendly, we use annual trophies; if you are a winner of one of our annual trophies we will engrave the plaque made out to your studio and it will be delivered to you in the mail. Please place the respective plaque in the correct order and enjoy your trophy with your studio name on it for the remainder of the year. Make arrangements for your trophies to be returned to Synergy Dance by January 1st of the following year so that other dancers may enjoy bringing it home for the years to come.

  • There will be no “claiming of an area” for private “warm-up” or private "dressing room" it is a public space where everyone is welcome. Be kind to your fellow competitors, without them, there would be no competition! Any studio, dancer or parent that abuses the dressing area will be disqualified or asked to leave the event. Each studio and participant will be responsible for totally cleaning their dressing areas. 
     
  • With the exception of the judges and staff, there will be no food or drink allowed in the auditorium. In addition no pictures or video recording is permitted. 
     
  • Upon entering a Synergy Dance event all participants give their permission for any photograph or video taken of them by Synergy dance and its affiliates to be used for promotional purposes without compensation. This includes but is not limited to; newspaper, brochures, ads, television, sales videos, the internet including facebook/you tube, newsletters and any other. 
     
  • Teachers must sign in with MC backstage at least five scheduled dances before their performance. At time of check in they will receive the participation certificate packages to be distributed to their dancers. Ribbons are awarded at the awards presentation.

  • Upon entering any Synergy dance sponsored event, it is agreed that all students, parents, relatives and teachers will not hold Synergy dance, its staff or directors or the host facilities responsible for any injury, death or loss of property during the event.

MUSIC

  • Cassette and CD player available for use, system is provided by Synergy dance. When permitted by the theatre Ipod will also be available.
     
  • Music must be cued and ready for performance.
     
  • Teachers are to play music for participants. In the event that a teacher cannot be present studio may submitt the name of one parent rep who will be granted teacher access for that performance.
     
  • Teachers with multiple groups/routines needing assistance with music playing may speak with backstage staff for assistance.
     
  • Music is to be collected after each performance.

  • Novice (first year of competition)
  • Level One (1-2 years of experience)
  • Level Two (3-5 years of experience)
  • Level Three (6+ years of experience)
  • Pro-Am (instructor-student category)
  • Pro-elite (professional category)
  • Adjudication Only (for those who only want feedback)
  • Adult category 

    These levels are based on the number of years the dancer has had training in the respective discipline

ADJUDICATIONS
Because video adjudications cannot be picked up immediately due to formatting time, all adjudications (written, audio, video) will be mailed directly to the studio. This rule is in effect to not give an advantage to routines that have selected written feedback if they have qualified for the Synergy showdown finals. Preffered method of adjudication feedback is to be selected at the time of registration. Once registration has been submitted and confirmation has been sent adjudication feedback style cannot be changed.
 

PLACEMENTS
All routines will be scored out of 100. (x 2 judges= 200) An average of the  scores will provide the final placement. When the teacher checks in backstage, dancers from every routine will be awarded a participation certificate that may be traded in for the participation prize of their choice or a medal. At adjudication routines will be awarded their placement, 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

0-79 Bronze

80-83 Silver

84-87 High Silver

88-91 Gold

92-95 High Gold

96+ Diamond

A $15 late fee for entries made after the deadline may be charged at the discretion of the administration. All late entries are subject to written adjudication only, additional fees will be applied to upgrade adjudication feedback to audio or video format. Please note that any order paid by Visa or Mastercard is subject to a 2% processing fee.

ADMISSION
A day pass for admission to regular competition is $5, or "free" with a non-perishable food donation to the local Surrey food bank.

Admission for Synergy Cup Showdown finals is $10. Entrance stamps may be purchased at the door.
